[ALBUM REVIEW] Ginger Trill – From Potch With Love

Ginger Trill’s finesse is unmatched in the South African rap industry. His laid back approach to flow, with a conviction in the words that makes his presence felt in every line, makes for one mean bar spittin’, word flippin’, Go-on-and-get-’em rapper. From Potch With Love no doubt was His Trillness in his pocket, and right now, this is the type of rapper this rap game needed.

Ginger’s descriptive raps, is the type of rap I’ve personally always wanted to make. Simply because barely anyone does it like that anymore. It’s not played out, it’s definitely not outdated, it’s the type of hip-hop that engages with the listener, not just gets them moving.

I imagine it was made in the basement of his mind with just an engineer and he’s just reminiscing. This entire project needed a drive from Johannesburg to Rustenburg. Long enough to hear the good music, but short enough to not lose your attention.

“I’ve been nice since Eve bit the Apple off like Macintosh”

Hoop Dreams, Ginger Trill
This is the jam I’ve been addicted to the most. “I do anything I wanna do
if Ginger Trill’s bars were athletes…

From Potch With Love, was perfect with the sample…oh lawd! You can almost imagine a gymnaist doing a floor routine along to the words, the cadence sounding like a pneumatic jack hammer, one after the other in timely fashion.

That’s the theme throughout it seems…backyard chillin’, the DJ cutting on some beats for Ginger to rap to typa vibe. Imagine the nostalgia when Its Yourz cuts on with beat box vibe. Bruv that DJ Premier scratching sounded like a Nas/Khuli Chana mix…with Ginger’s wordflips. Yes! The Tswana is in there like the chakalala in a bowl of dope rhymes…the vibe. That’s the one I need to play for my kids.

We living through expeditious times lately and it’s difficult to catch many peoples attention. The excitement I felt when I heard Dope Boy was deep. I caught the flow, caught the vibe…then the 808 was like ‘Let him go…

There’s an open hat panned to the right, there’s a cool flow from Ginger orchestrating a vibe with a hard snare and clap with that triangle in the room, and chest thumping kick! Ooooooph!! “Dope boy, swerving through…hella smooth…“, look there’s a few beanies and maybe a bucket hat in the crowd, but I see NO CAPS when Trill rocks a mic. Smooth. Laid Back. Succinct. A performance…from Potch…with Love.

Uh, special preference, opulence coated in excellence, heaven sent this level of elegance, -decadence, only at selected outlets…” 2019 Lyricist of the Year amongst some bangers and tunes that were thrown out, the fellow nominated Emcees were the likes of JimmyWiz, YoungstaCPT…Reason…Homie still was the best choice! I almost got lost in the article, playing the tape until they mentioned spilling House Of BNG on some Jordans…yea…I think it needs to be said.

There’s many hip-hop artists in the South African Industry, even fewer Rappers, whether they write for themselves or not, we have enough to run an entire industry. The endangered species here are the MC’s. People who can move a crowd, capture the attention of a crowd of pure energy and talent. Ginger is one of them. Ginger is one of the last of a dying breed…but his skills alone would revive it if it died indeed. Thus do your best to get a Ginger Project. Let listening to what a rapper has to say entertain you once more.
